How they’re built
The features you only notice later
Cheap cabinets look the same on day one. The difference shows up the first time a drawer is loaded, or the first time something gets wet under the sink.
Half-inch plywood sides on a three-quarter inch solid hardwood frame, with a plywood base and back. Not particle board. It holds a screw, it holds weight, and it survives a leak under the sink instead of swelling into crumbs.
The box is braced with corner block stabilisers and an I-beam rather than relying on staples and glue, which is what keeps it square after it has been carried up a stair and set on an uneven floor.
Five-eighths inch solid hardwood boxes, dovetailed at the corners. Concealed undermount guides, so the drawer pulls all the way out, carries seventy-five pounds and does not slam. The runners sit under the box rather than down the sides, which means wider drawers.
Concealed soft-close hinges opening to 105 degrees, adjustable in three planes. Doors line up on an old wall and stay lined up, and they can be tuned later without taking anything off.
Natural birch veneer inside, sealed with a UV clear coat, on adjustable locking shelf clips. The inside of the cabinet resists stains and scratches instead of being bare board.
Three-quarter inch solid hardwood doors around an engineered centre panel, which is what stops a shaker panel splitting as it moves through the seasons. Painted or stained, with the stains left showing the grain, and every finish carried in stock.

Same cabinet either way. The difference is who puts it together, and whether it will physically get to where it is going.
Flat pack
Best when access is tight or you are doing the labour yourself.

- One person can carry a panel. Nobody carries a built 36 inch base alone

If you are not sure, measure the narrowest point between the truck and the room. A built 36 inch base is about 36 by 34 by 24 inches and does not bend. Most ranch houses are fine. Walk-up apartments, finished basements and old farmhouse stairs usually are not.
